The Japanese language writing system is phonetic.　Each character represents a sound unlike in English where combinations of characters create sounds.
There are 3 'alphabets' in Japanese: Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. Romanji is the writing system used to express Japanese in Roman letters. In this wiki I will use Hiragana, Katakana and Romanji.
